Sharing three things I would change in my own teac

Sharing three things I would change in my own teaching practice after attending Miriam Beloglovsky’s talk on loose parts play (as part of Seneca Lab School’s ECE series):

1. Invite families to contribute loose parts for the class. This helps involve families in play, making children’s home life visible, and opens the possibilities for multicultural loose parts.

2. Invite children to demonstrate learning through loose parts. Miriam refers to loose parts as a ‘pedagogy of liberation’ - how can we make this true for children in ECE spaces?

3. Think of what ‘diverse’ loose parts might look like and how we can represent cultures through loose parts. Diverse loose parts allow children to “tell you who they are”.

It was so interesting to rethink something seemingly so simple like loose parts and how small changes might open up a world of possibilities. ✨

Let’s chat about MEANINGFUL multilingual environmental print! A great place to begin is with the names of students in their home language, written by their families. We used these name tags for things like a cubby, name cards and in play. Some benefits of meaningful multilingual print include:

💕 Making visible the unique cultural and linguistic identities of young children

💕 Normalizing language in print other than English in our classrooms

💕Research shows that culturally responsive pedagogy increases student engagement and learning (Sleeter, 2012)

Over the last month, I had the pleasure of interviewing some teachers and DECEs I’ve been following on Instagram for years. This process also introduced me to new ECE friends, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the connections and conversations.

One thing that stood out to me was just how talented and dedicated our ECE community is. I learned about indie authors like Rosa @rosavieiramcguire , Steph @mindflowkidz and Ashoke @ashokemohanraj who have authored children's books about the experiences of young children settling in Canada, mindfulness and climate change.

These conversations reminded me of the power of storytelling in education, and how important it is to take the time to get to know each other in this little internet community of ours.✨

On this Remembrance Day, let us honour not only the courage of soldiers from Canada and the Commonwealth but also those from diverse countries and backgrounds who fought side by side. They fought in unfamiliar lands, under harsh conditions, showing extraordinary bravery and resilience. Today, we remember all of them—their sacrifices, their stories, and their enduring legacy.
